Ex-Wind Gap man says wife’s bingo habit led him to molest two young girls

`A former Wind Gap man said he repeatedly sexually assaulted two young girls because his wife spent too much time playing bingo.

”I told her — she was going to bingo three, four times a week. I told her to cut down to once a week. She said if they had bingo every day, she’d go,” Floyd Kinney Jr., 49, said.

”So, because your wife went to bingo, these children suffered?” Northampton County Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden asked Kinney on Friday.

”Yes,” Kinney said.’

The Straight Dope: How can waves be crashing on all sides of an island at once?

The Straight Dope article itself isn’t all that great. The person who asked the question seemed a bit silly, if you ask me. But anyways, at the bottom of the page is a section called “Questions we’re still thinking about”. And some of them seem even more silly. :) For example:

`Don’t ask how this came up, please. Which weighs more: a cubic foot of unsalted butter, or a cubic foot of an adult blue whale? –JKP, via e-mail’

`How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges? –Justin Lefto, via e-mail’

Quad

`The objective of Quad is to get the four blue blocks located at each corner to the center of the grid. Place pieces to form rows and columns, thus elminating the blocks. Blue blocks can’t be eliminated from the grid and any blocks that form a row or column with them won’t disappear. Completing rows and columns in between the blue blocks will cause them to shift towards the center.’

5,000 Posts

I only just realized that I’ve passed the 5,000 posts mark on this site. Not too bad, I figure. :) I actually passed it about a month and a half ago with this post: M400X Skycar VTOL Prototype Aircraft. This is now my 5226th post.

So, hooray for me or something. :)

Women fight off naked man in bizarre assault

`The older woman began beating the man with a stick, while her daughter called police on her cell phone. The woman who was being assaulted ran away, and the older woman and her daughter started walking away too, when the naked man came after the daughter and tried to grab her cell phone. The mother then started hitting the assailant with the stick again, at which point the man turned on her and tries to snatch her eyeglasses off of her face. The daughter then managed to get the man off of her mother, at which point, police say, the man started singing and dancing in a circle.

Police arrived and the naked man started fighting with them, stricking one officer in the face and hitting another with a large stick. They finally manged to take the man into custody and took him to a hospital to be evaluated.’

Singing and dancing in a circle. :)

Israel developing anti-militant “bionic hornet”

`Israel is using nanotechnology to try to create a robot no bigger than a hornet that would be able to chase, photograph and kill its targets, an Israeli newspaper reported on Friday.

The flying robot, nicknamed the “bionic hornet,” would be able to navigate its way down narrow alleyways to target otherwise unreachable enemies such as rocket launchers, the daily Yedioth Ahronoth said.

It is one of several weapons being developed by scientists to combat militants, it said. Others include super gloves that would give the user the strength of a “bionic man” and miniature sensors to detect suicide bombers.’

Mosque to get police guard for bikini rally

`Police have been asked to protect Australia’s largest mosque next weekend because of concerns that a bikini march staged to coincide with the anniversary of the Cronulla riots may get out of control.

The caretaker of Lakemba Mosque, the Lebanese Muslim Association, says it is taking no risks, requesting at least 32 police officers to protect the place of worship on Saturday and Sunday. [..]

“We are treating this as something that is funny and hilarious but also taking precautions,” Mr Zreika said of the bikini march. “Some people may see this as provocation and the last thing that we want is to see anyone being attacked.”‘

The Girl Who Gave Birth To Rabbits

The Girl Who Gave Birth to Rabbits: A True Medical Mystery

‘This is the engrossing story of Mary Toft, a young 18th-century Englishwoman who sought to make some money by inserting parts of rabbits into her vagina and pretending to expel them from her uterus. The case was celebrated at the time–popular poems appeared about it, bestsellers were written about it, the king of England ordered an investigation, her contemporaries considered her, as the title puts it, a medical mystery–and she became something of a freak-sensation. Pickover (Time: A Traveller’s Guide, etc.), carefully explores how 18th-century physicians were able to believe in such a medical marvel–even though they were scientifically in a position to have known better–and then finds in this history a cautionary tale appropriate for our own times.’

Boy Super Hero Scares Off Robbers

`A 4-year-old boy in Durham is being called a super hero. The young boy dressed up in a Power Rangers costume and protected his family as robbers got away with their belongings. [..]

In the most recent case, robbers forced their way into an apartment in north Durham on Friday and held a family at gun point. In a strange twist, 4-year-old Stevie Long may have saved the day. “I was saving everybody,” Stevie said. “I was the red ranger.”

His mother says he snuck away, and put on his Power Ranger costume and tried to fight the robbers.

His mom thinks he spooked the men and they ran away. The robbers did escape with money, credit cards and cell phones.’

Could this be the new Da Vinci code?

`* This was painted by a person with a rare and severe mental disorder. He was constantly seeing his own fantasies all around him. He also had a certain phobia (undisclosed).

* His (the poster’s) psychiatry professor showed this painting in a lecture, and said there was one tell-tale sign in it that showed the painter’s insanity.

* The professor didn’t say what that sign was, leaving the students to do the guesswork. The only clues he gave was, “don’t look for small details, look at the whole; if you figure out what the phobia was, you’ve got the answer; ask yourself what could have preceded this scene; think of what the place would look like with all the objects removed“.

* The professor said that during the 15 years of his teaching, only one student had figured it out.’

Genetically engineered blood protein can be used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen

`Scientists have combined two molecules that occur naturally in blood to engineer a molecular complex that uses solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, says research published today in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

This molecular complex can use energy from the sun to create hydrogen gas, providing an alternative to electrolysis, the method typically used to split water into its constituent parts. The breakthrough may pave the way for the development of novel ways of creating hydrogen gas for use as fuel in the future.

Professors Tsuchida and Komatsu from Waseda University, Japan, in collaboration with Imperial College London, synthesised a large molecular complex from albumin, a protein molecule that is found at high levels in blood serum, and porphyrin, a molecule which is used to carry oxygen around the body and gives blood its deep red colour. Porphyrin molecules are normally found combined with metals, and in their natural state in the blood they have an iron atom at their centre. The scientists modified the porphyrin molecule to swap the iron for a zinc atom in the middle, which completely changed the chemistry and characteristics of the molecule.’

Man allegedly tries to put wife in oven

`Jackson and his 29-year-old wife, who have been separated since July, have five children ranging in age from 1 to 13 years old, Shupe said. Jackson apparently started fighting with his wife after she and the children returned to their Conyers home on Thanksgiving.

At one point during the fight, Jackson allegedly attempted to stuff his wife inside the kitchen oven, which had been left on to heat the house, Shupe said. The woman escaped and went to the sheriff’s office with visible head injuries, Shupe said.

Investigators found Jackson hiding under a bed at his mother’s house in Decatur, where he had been living since the separation, Shupe said.’

Police use Taser on python to free man

`A police officer used a Taser to subdue a python that had wrapped itself around a man’s arm and would not let go. Steve Crilly, 47, was feeding a rat to the eight-foot-long albino Burmese python, which belongs to his daughter, when it when it bit his left hand and wrapped tightly around his left arm Wednesday night, Uniontown patrolman Ray Miller said.

“The snake was on his arm and was eating his hand,” Miller told the Herald-Standard of Uniontown for Friday’s editions. Crilly “was very calm, considering there was a good bit of blood,” he said.’

Man on crack when alligator attacked

`A man who was attacked by an alligator this morning was naked and smoking crack at the time, Polk County deputies who rescued him said today.

The alligator had the man in his jaws when deputies arrived at Lake Parker in Lakeland about 4 a.m. today. They were called by nearby residents who reported hearing a man yelling for help. [..]

Apgar, 45, of Polk City, suffered a broken arm, partially amputated left arm and trauma to his left leg. Doctors are trying to reattach the arm at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where was listed in critical condition. [..]

Judd said Apgar told deputies he was smoking crack-cocaine at the adjacent park, but it was unclear why he was naked or why he was attacked by the alligator.’
