Officer Doesn’t Recall Shooting Truck Driver

‘A Kansas City police officer was suffering a diabetes-related reaction when he apparently shot a truck driver at a convenience store, the officer’s attorney said Wednesday.

The officer, who has not been identified by the Police Department, doesn’t remember shooting anyone on Monday night, attorney John P. O’Connor said.

“It’s obvious to me there was no intent on his part to hurt anyone,” O’Connor said. [..]

The shooting victim, who also has not been identified, did not suffer life-threatening wounds. The officer has been put on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.’

Ex-Cop, Wife Charged After Infamous Pot Brownie Call

‘They may have committed a high crime, but a former Dearborn cop and his wife are only going to be charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly smoking pot in Dearborn Heights.

Edward Sanchez, 30, and his wife, Stacy, 27, are expected to turn themselves in for arraignment on one charge each of using marijuana, according assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Maria Miller.

On April 21, 2006, Sanchez, who lives in Dearborn Heights, called 911 in a panic after he and his wife ate brownies laced with marijuana he said he took from criminal suspects.

Dearborn police allowed Sanchez to resign from his job on May 23, 2006, even though investigators said he admitted to taking the marijuana from his police car and using it to make the brownies. Dearborn police reports the Free Press obtained said Sanchez told investigators he planned to use the marijuana to train his police dog.’

School Guards Break Child’s Arm And Arrest Her For Dropping Cake

‘School security guards in Palmdale, CA have been caught on camera assaulting a 16-year-old girl and breaking her arm after she spilled some cake during lunch and left some crumbs on the floor after cleaning it up.

The incident occurred last week at Knight High School in Palmdale and was caught on a cell phone camera by another pupil who was then also assaulted by the security guards. [..]

The girl, Pleajhai Mervin, told Fox News LA that she was bumped while queuing for lunch and dropped the cake. After being ordered to clean it up and then re-clean the spot three times, she attempted to leave the area out of embarrassment but was jumped on by security who forced her onto a table, breaking her wrist in the process.

Pleajhai also says that the security guard in the picture yelled “hold still nappy-head” at her, which at the time she did not know was a racist comment.’

Lab tech bites boy, 3, during blood test

‘A laboratory technician was fired after the parents of a 3-year-old boy claimed she bit his shoulder during a blood test, a hospital spokesman said.

Faith Buntin took her son Victor to St. Vincent Hospital on Friday to have blood drawn because of recent recalls of toys involving lead. She said she saw the worker put her mouth on Victor’s shoulder as she restrained him so another lab worker could draw the blood.

“I looked at her like that was the craziest thing that I’d ever seen,” Faith Buntin said Tuesday. “She looked at me and smiled and said, ‘Oh, it was just a play bite. He’s not hurt.'”‘

Newborn Found with Pacifier Taped in Mouth, Nursery Shutdown

‘A 4-month-old boy was found in a darkened room at a day care center with a pacifier taped into his mouth, the Tennessee Department of Human Services announced Wednesday.

The department responded Tuesday to an anonymous complaint that a caregiver at Noah’s Ark Nursery and Preschool in Jefferson City was taping babies’ mouths shut.

Upon arrival, an investigator heard muffled whining from the bathroom and found the boy’s mouth covered with two pieces of two-inch-wide clear packing tape over a pacifier, department spokeswoman Michelle Mowery Johnson said.’

More Evil Things to Type into Google

‘More searches which Mother Nature never intended! Most of these are handy for finding security exploits on your own site; simply add a string from your own domain’s URL to check. But really, why limit ourselves? If it has an evil purpose, I’m including it. By the way, there is nothing illegal about typing in a search string; it is up to the website to secure this data. It’s what you DO with this information that you find which makes all of the difference.’

Man charged with crime of burning cross into his own yard

‘De’Andre June told police he woke up Wednesday morning to find the charred outline of a cross burned in the lawn of his home. June now is accused of burning the cross in the lawn himself.

The 47-year-old Anoka man was charged Friday with falsely reporting a crime. He also is charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process stemming from an altercation when police arrested him Thursday afternoon on a felony warrant from Hennepin County in connection with a financial fraud case. [..]

“Inmates from the Anoka County Jail saw the news story on TV and recognized Mr. June,” said Capt. Phil Johanson of the Anoka Police Department. “(They) said that when he was in jail with them last week, he had made comments that he was going to do something like this to get sympathy from the community and the church for financial gains and otherwise.”‘

‘Hot’ Ice Could Lead To Medical Device

‘Harvard physicists have shown that specially treated diamond coatings can keep water frozen at body temperature, a finding that may have applications in future medical implants.

Doctoral student Alexander Wissner-Gross and Efthimios Kaxiras, physics professor and Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics, spent a year building and examining computer models that showed that a layer of diamond coated with sodium atoms will keep water frozen up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit.

In ice, water molecules are arranged in a rigid framework that gives the substance its hardness. The process of melting is somewhat like a building falling down: pieces that had been arranged into a rigid structure move and flow against one another, becoming liquid water.

The computer model shows that whenever a water molecule near the diamond-sodium surface starts to fall out of place, the surface stabilizes it and reassembles the crystalline ice structure.’

This is a whole page full of imagery in that spirit. It may corrupt some of your childhood memories. :)

The Devil’s Bible returns to Prague

‘A monumental Bible rumoured to have been written with the help of the Devil has been returned to Prague for the first time in 350 years.

The 13th century Codex Gigas, which is 3ft long and weighs 165lb, is thought to be the biggest book in the world and is known as The Devil’s Bible due to a supposed satanic bargain made by its author.

It was looted by Swedish soldiers from Prague castle at the end of the Thirty Years War in 1648 and taken to Stockholm, where it is the prize exhibit at the Royal Library.

But until now Swedish authorities have refused to lend it to the Czech Republic, which regards the Bible as stolen property, for fear they would not get it back.

The priceless manuscript is housed in a vault-like room behind bullet-proof glass.’

Write your own laws

‘It’s said the powerful write their own laws but, in New Zealand, now everyone can.

Due to a new wiki launched by the New Zealand police, members of the public can now contribute to the drafting of the country’s new policing act.

NZ Police Superintendent Hamish McCardle, the officer in charge of developing the new act, said the initiative had already been described as a “new frontier of democracy”.

“People are calling it ‘extreme democracy’ and perhaps it is,” he said.

“It’s a novel move but when it comes to the principles that go into policing, the person on the street has a good idea … as they are a customer,” he said.’

Animal Shelter Worker Accused Of Sex With Dog

‘A volunteer worker at the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter has been suspended as a result of accusations that he engaged in sexual activity with a dog, a city spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

The witness said Gustavo Castanon, 33, was having a bassett hound perform a sex act on him, according to a police report.’

With 300,000 names on list, terrorist center always on alert

‘About a hundred times a day, from anywhere in the world, a phone call comes in that sounds something like this: I think I’ve got a terrorist suspect here, can you check it out?

Answering those calls are dozens of operations specialists in a highly secure center in a classified location in northern Virginia. With access to the government’s secret terror watch list, their job is to make sure nobody on the list falls through the cracks.

CNN got a firsthand look inside the Terrorist Screening Center recently — but not until a security officer who accompanied the TV crew at all times bellowed to the hub of the center’s operation, “Unsecure!” to make sure any classified information was protected from view.

For the first time publicly, officials told CNN the consolidated watch list has 300,000 names.’

Maiden Man Finds Human Foot In Auction Item

‘A bargain shopper made a gruesome discovery after going to an auction in Maiden.

Shannon Whisnant found a human foot inside a cooker he bought at an auction. Police say Mini Warehouse Rentals held the auction because the man renting the storage unit didn’t pay.

Police discovered that man had his foot amputated in 2004 after a plane crash, and he kept it in the cooker that was sold on Tuesday.

Whisnant said he hasn’t decided what to do with the cooker.

Police say you can legally keep amputated body parts as long as it’s for religious purposes.’

Calls for less nudity on Everest

‘Nudity could be outlawed on the world’s tallest mountain complaints about the number of climbers attempting to reach its summit without clothes

Nepalese mountaineering authorities are reportedly outraged that people were ditching their clothes on Mount Everest, which is worshipped by some villagers.

President of Nepal Mountaineering Association Ang Tshering told AP that following last year’s record by a Nepali climber, who claimed the world’s highest display of nudity while standing on the 8,850m summit in temperatures about minus 10 degrees Celsius, restrictions should be implemented.

“There should be strict regulations to discourage such attempts by climbers,” Tshering said.’

Horse Smuggled Onto Flight In Dog Crate

‘Someone smuggled a miniature horse onto a plane that landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Tuesday, authorities said.

The small show horse was stuck inside a dog crate in the cargo area of the flight from Germany to Atlanta. Customs agents said the horse was on its way to Guatemala.

Officials said it appears the passenger who brought the horse onto the plane was trying to make it appear he was bringing a dog.

Customs agents said the owner did not have the proper permits, and the carrier the horse was in was too small.’

Scientologists given accused’s psychiatric file

‘The Church of Scientology has been granted access to a confidential psychiatric report tendered as evidence in the trial of a Sydney woman accused of murdering her family earlier this year.

The 25-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was diagnosed with a psychotic illness last year but allegedly discouraged by her parents from taking her prescribed medication because of their Scientology beliefs. [..]

Cyrus Brooks, community relations officer for the church, said it had sought access to the document after media coverage linking Scientology to the alleged murders, although access was granted on condition that the church not release the report to the media.

Despite this, Mr Brooks has emailed excerpts from the report to journalists to “correct” their reporting of the case.’

Man Loses House on California Freeway

‘“There is no hard-and-fast rule about how long a house can sit on the side of the freeway.”

These were the words of a California Department of Transportation representative regarding the bizarre scene shown above.

Last Saturday, Patrick Richardson was attempting to move his home from Santa Monica to Santa Clarita when he took what amounted to a disastrous wrong turn. Abandoning the approved “house moving” highway route, Richardson found his house colliding with an overpass on the Hollywood Freeway. Eventually he was forced to unload his domicile near an exit and plan a new strategy.’

China bans ‘sexual sounds’ on TV

‘China has banned “sexually provocative sounds” on television and pulled the plug on a show reconstructing infamous crimes by women ahead of a major Communist Party meeting next month.

The order, issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, is the latest in a raft of measures which have included cancelling reality shows featuring sex changes and plastic surgery and banning talent contests during prime-time.

“Sexually suggestive advertisements and scenes showing how women are influenced into a life of crime are detrimental to society,” it said in a statement posted on its website, referring to its decision to axe Red Question Mark, a crime documentary.

“Commercials containing sexually provocative sounds or tantalizing language as well as vulgar advertisements for breast enhancement and female underwear are banned, effective immediately,” said the SARFT notice.’

Tom Cruise furious with gassy crew member

‘Tom Cruise was left furious after a crew member on his latest film set passed wind during a minute’s silence.

The Hollywood actor – who is currently shooting World War II drama Valkyrie in Berlin – had paused filming to honor the anti-Nazi heroes portrayed in the movie when one employee decided to use the tribute to break wind.

Fellow star Christian Berkel – who plays anti-Hitler plotter Albrecht Mertz von Quirbheim – said, “The film’s director Bryan Singer, the screenplay writer Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise asked us all to observe a moment’s silence shortly before we started filming.”

A source on the set told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper, “Fortunately the mystery gassy man didn’t completely ruin the touching gesture. [..]

The silence was filmed and now Cruise and the producers will go through the footage to identify the culprit, who is likely to be fired.’

Arizona Teen Becomes Sixth Victim This Year of Brain-Eating Amoeba

‘The amoeba typically live in lake bottoms, grazing off algae and bacteria in the sediment. Beach said people become infected when they wade through shallow water and stir up the bottom. If someone allows water to shoot up the nose — say, by doing a cannonball off a cliff — the amoeba can latch onto the person’s olfactory nerve.

The amoeba destroys tissue as it makes its way up to the brain.

People who are infected tend to complain of a stiff neck, headaches and fevers, Beach said. In the later stages, they’ll show signs of brain damage such as hallucinations and behavioral changes.

Once infected, most people have little chance of survival. Some drugs have been effective stopping the amoeba in lab experiments, but people who have been attacked rarely survive, Beach said.

“Usually, from initial exposure it’s fatal within two weeks,” Beach said.’
