Prison frees felon based on phony fax

‘Officials released a prisoner from a state facility after receiving a phony fax that ordered the man be freed, and didn’t catch the mistake for nearly two weeks.

Timothy Rouse, 19, is charged with beating an elderly western Kentucky man and was at the Kentucky Correctional & Psychiatric Center in La Grange for a mental evaluation. He was released from that facility on April 6 after officials received the fake court order.

It contained grammatical errors, was not typed on letterhead and was faxed from a local grocery store. The fax falsely claimed that the Kentucky Supreme Court “demanded” Rouse be released.

Lexington police arrested Rouse at his mother’s home Thursday evening.’

Sealers fight wind, ice, time

‘As the ice thickens along the coast of Newfoundland and even the icebreakers are getting stuck in it, seal hunters and the Coast Guard are praying for the wind to change.

Relentless northeasterly gales have piled up the ice from Bonavista to St. Anthony and trapped about 100 sealing “longliners” returning from the annual hunt. Some crews have been forced to abandon their vessels. A few have been flown to safety by Coast Guard helicopters. Others are camped on the ice floes beside their boats as icebreakers fight to smash their way through. Meanwhile, food and water are running short. Fuel could be a problem when the boats are able to move. As well as rescue operations, the four choppers are ferrying supplies.’

Escort agency for Geeks

‘A Dutch escort agency is launching a special virgin service for computer geeks.

Sociology student Zoe Vialet, who set up Society Service last year, says she has had a lot of demand from virgins.

She says most of them work in the IT sector and added: “They are very sweet but are afraid of seeking contact with other people. They mean it very well but are very scared. [..]

“Some men need a little bit of help. But it makes them happy and they are glowing . There is nothing more terrible than dying as a virgin.”‘

Taleban uses boy to behead ‘spy’

‘The Taleban in Afghanistan have used a boy of around 12 to behead a man they accused of spying for the US.

Parts of a video of the beheading were broadcast on the Dubai-based al-Arabiya TV network.

The Taleban said the dead man, Ghulam Nabi, had given the US information which led to an air strike in which a senior Taleban commander died.

The video footage shows Mr Nabi being blindfolded with a chequered scarf and making what is said to be a confession.

The boy, wearing a camouflage jacket and wielding a large knife, denounces him as a spy and then cuts off his head.’

Woman Registers a .47 on Breath Tester

‘A woman arrested following two car crashes last week registered a .47 blood-alcohol content on a breath test – nearly six times the legal intoxication threshold and possibly a state record.

Deana F. Jarrett, 54, was taken to Evergreen Hospital as a precaution following her arrest April 11, the Washington State Patrol said Wednesday. No one was injured in the accidents.

Jarrett blew the .47 on a portable breath tester after she collided with two other vehicles in quick succession, the patrol said. A check of all 356,000 breath tests administered since 1998 in Washington turned up only 35 above .40 – and none of those was higher than .45.’

I wonder if she gets a medal.

Free surgery for boy ends in brain death

‘A 16-year-old Russian boy found a hospital halfway around the world willing to remove his brain tumor for free. His father says there was one condition – that his treatment could be filmed for a feel-good story by a local television station about the charitable operation.

But the positive story St. Anthony Hospital and neurosurgeon Paul Francel hoped to tell became tragic when the surgery left David Kurbanov brain dead. Now his anguished father is lashing out at the hospital and hoping for a miracle recovery.

Sabit Kurbanov said he had been led to believe that his son would fully recover, and he accused St. Anthony Hospital of performing experimental surgery.’

NASA gunman kills hostage, himself

‘An armed man killed a hostage, then himself, at Nasa’s Johnson Space Centre, the latest incident to rattle the United States after the shooting massacre this week at Virginia Tech university.

Another hostage, a female co-worker, was found bound with duct tape, but unharmed, police said.

“Apparently there was some type of dispute between the suspect and the victim,” Houston police chief Harold Hurtt said.’

Girl Attacks Classmate With Medieval Weapon

‘A fight at an Indiana high school turned into a medieval attack when a freshman girl hit another student and tried to hit a teacher with an uncommon weapon.

As CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot reports, Gary police say the girl still has not said how she got the medieval weapon, which weighs about six pounds. The freshman, who has been charged with battery, told police she brought the weapon to school because she was tired of being picked on.

“She was aiming for my face,” said Shanique Ballard, the target of the attack.

Ballard said she bumped into one of the freshman’s friends in the hallway at Lew Wallace High School, and an argument started. Ballard said that’s when the young girl pulled out a flail – a sharp, spiked metal ball attached to a handle by a chain or short stick – and started swinging.’

Hair oil boy sets himself alight

‘A teenager was left with severe burns when he accidentally set his hair on fire after rubbing in head lice lotion.

Matthew Moore, 15, of Purbeck, Dorset, had just applied the lotion when he started playing with a cigarette lighter, which ignited his hair. [..]

In a statement, manufacturers of the lotion Thornton & Ross said: “It’s the very first incident of its kind.

“The product is not flammable. It’s been fully approved by various regulatory authorities.”‘ [..]

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service added: “Don’t play with lighters close to your hair and that goes generally when you have applied any type of hair product.”‘

Woman charged after pointing toy gun at class

‘The mother of a kindergartner was charged with assault Thursday and banned from school after officials said she walked into the child’s classroom, pointed a toy cap gun at students and pulled the trigger several times. [..]

School officials said the woman was in the classroom to pay for an upcoming field trip. While the teacher’s back was turned, “The mom walked in toward the middle of the classroom, and the teacher heard this click, click, click, click — like four to six times,” Principal Jean Heise said.

“A teacher’s assistant witnessed her take a gun and point it directly toward four to five kids. With everything that’s happened the last couple of days, she (the assistant) was just in shock,” the principal said.

She then left with the small child and took the toy gun with her.’

Russia Plans World’s Longest Tunnel, a Link to Alaska

‘Russia plans to build the world’s longest tunnel, a transport and pipeline link under the Bering Strait to Alaska, as part of a $65 billion project to supply the U.S. with oil, natural gas and electricity from Siberia.

The project, which Russia is coordinating with the U.S. and Canada, would take 10 to 15 years to complete, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow today. State organizations and private companies in partnership would build and control the route, known as TKM-World Link, he said.

A 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) transport corridor from Siberia into the U.S. will feed into the tunnel, which at 64 miles will be more than twice as long as the underwater section of the Channel Tunnel between the U.K. and France, according to the plan. The tunnel would run in three sections to link the two islands in the Bering Strait between Russia and the U.S.’

Catholic Church buries limbo after centuries

‘The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went.

In a long-awaited document, the Church’s International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an “unduly restrictive view of salvation.” [..]

“The conclusion of this study is that there are theological and liturgical reasons to hope that infants who die without baptism may be saved and brought into eternal happiness even if there is not an explicit teaching on this question found in revelation,” it said.

“There are reasons to hope that God will save these infants precisely because it was not possible (to baptize them).”‘

Suburban Vancouver drama teacher has pupils re-enact Virginia Tech massacre

‘A drama teacher at a suburban Vancouver elementary school is expressing regret for having her students re-enact the Virginia Tech massacre.

The principal at South Park elementary school in Delta says the teacher has used topical news events as the basis for her plays in the past.

But this time Doug Thomson agrees with some students and parents who say she went too far.

The Grade 6 and Grade 7 students were asked to play roles from Monday’s massacre in which a mentally ill student gunned down 32 students and teachers at the U.S. college before killing himself.’

Dad makes son wear sign for using drugs

‘A father says he wasn’t trying to shame his 14-year-old son when he made the boy wear a large sandwich-board sign saying, “I abused and sold drugs.” [..]

“I’m doing this because I love him,” he said. “We do have an extreme drug problem in America, and maybe it’s time for extreme measures that parents need to take to monitor this problem that we have.” [..]

The father said he recently learned after reading the boy’s MySpace page that his son was involved with marijuana and OxyContin. That’s when he decided to act, and the boy agreed to the punishment. [..]

By then the boy said he’d learned his lesson. “This is embarrassing. I ain’t going to be doing it again,” the boy said. “Drugs are for losers. That’s all I can say.”‘

Armed with snub-nosed .38, Miss America 1944 stops intruder on her farm

‘Miss America 1944 has a talent that likely has never appeared on a beauty pageant stage: She fired a handgun to shoot out a vehicle’s tires and stop an intruder.

Venus Ramey, 82, confronted a man on her farm in south-central Kentucky last week after she saw her dog run into a storage building where thieves had previously made off with old farm equipment.

Ramey said the man told her he would leave. “I said, ‘Oh, no you won’t,’ and I shot their tires so they couldn’t leave,” Ramey said.

She had to balance on her walker as she pulled out a snub-nosed .38-calibre handgun.’

Transgender Student Runs for Prom King

‘When school officials announce the name of the Fresno High School prom king on Saturday, Cinthia Covarrubias will be wearing a tuxedo just like the six boys vying for the honor.

School officials this week added the 17-year-old’s name to the ballot for prom king, reversing a previous district protocol that allowed only males to run for king and females for prom queen.

Gay youth advocates called it a landmark victory for campus gender expression and said they believe it’s the first time in the U.S. that an openly transgender student has run for prom royalty.’

Marijuana halts lung cancer growth by half

‘More and more media reports are mentioning the potential merits of marijuana. The most recent headlines say the active ingredient in the drug cuts tumor growth in common lung cancers in half and greatly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread.

Researchers at Harvard University tested marijuana’s main ingredient, delta-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, in both lab and mouse studies and say their experiments are the first to show THC inhibits the growth of cancer.’

The End of a 1,400-Year-Old Business

‘The world’s oldest continuously operating family business ended its impressive run last year. Japanese temple builder Kongo Gumi, in operation under the founders’ descendants since 578, succumbed to excess debt and an unfavorable business climate in 2006.

How do you make a family business last for 14 centuries? Kongo Gumi’s case suggests that it’s a good idea to operate in a stable industry. Few industries could be less flighty than Buddhist temple construction. The belief system has survived for thousands of years and has many millions of adherents. With this firm foundation, Kongo had survived some tumultuous times, notably the 19th century Meiji restoration when it lost government subsidies and began building commercial buildings for the first time. But temple construction had until recently been a reliable mainstay, contributing 80% of Kongo Gumi’s $67.6 million in 2004 revenues.’

The Pal Diet

‘I have 2 dogs & I was buying a large bag of Pal at Big W and standing inline at the check out.

A woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

On impulse, I told her that no, I was starting The Pal Diet again although I probably shouldn’t because I’d ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IV’s in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Pal nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry & that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a guy who was behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I’d ended up in the hospital in that condition because I had been poisoned. I told her no; it was because I’d been sitting in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

I thought one guy was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard as he staggered out the door.

Stupid bitch…why else would I buy dog food??’

In a Major Step, Saudi Arabia Agrees to Write Off 80 Percent of Iraqi Debt

‘Saudi Arabia has agreed to forgive 80 percent of the more than $15 billion that Iraq owes the kingdom, Iraqi and Saudi officials said yesterday, a major step given Saudi reluctance to provide financial assistance to the Shiite-dominated government in Baghdad.

But Iraqi Finance Minister Bayan Jabr said in an interview that Russia was holding out on debt forgiveness until talks begin on concessions that Russian oil and gas companies had under Saddam Hussein. Russian Embassy officials in Washington declined to comment late yesterday.’

Residents Protest Offensive Sign

‘Some Ocala residents aren’t laughing at a joke posted on the sign of a local fencing business. The sign in front of Hercules Fence Company says: “What has four wheels and flies? A dead cripple in a wheelchair.” [..]

Terrillion and others protested in front of the business yesterday and demanded the sign be taken down. The store’s commercial manager told protesters the message would come down Friday. The manager said the store’s owner — Paul Buchkovich — decided which weekly jokes to post.

The company also drew criticism in 2005 with another joke posted on its sign. During Violence Awareness Week, its sign said: “Take your ex-wife out. One bullet oughtta do it.”‘
