‘Calgary police handed jaywalking tickets to homeless people evacuated from a shelter Thursday morning, upsetting residents and the centre’s executive director.
People inside the Drop-In Centre were told to leave after the discovery of an electrical problem. Executive director Dermot Baldwin estimates about 50 residents were given tickets after they exited the building.
“You’ve got hundreds of people who’ve been evacuated from the building and the police are giving out jaywalking tickets,” he said. “It’s not a helpful thing. It’s not a service to the people, that’s for sure.”
He said many of those ticketed, especially the mentally ill, won’t be able to afford to pay the $57 fine and will likely have to go to jail.’
‘Teachers who were suspicious that children on a school camp in Victoria might have alcohol in their bags found something much more sinister instead – two sawn-off shotguns and several rounds of ammunition.
Inspector Craig Gillard of Colac police said two boys, aged 14 and 15, were among a group of students from Colac College who had been on a school camp in the Gippsland region near the town of Bairnsdale.
He said teachers had become suspicious that some students might have alcohol hidden in their bags so decided to do a search.
“During that search, a teacher has located a 22 calibre (sawn-off) rifle and 10 rounds of ammunition in one bag, and a 12-gauge (sawn-off) shotgun and seven rounds of ammunition in another bag,” Insp Gillard said on Southern Cross radio.’
‘A Sun City West veterinarian was arrested on suspicion of punching a five-pound Chihuahua five times in the head, temporarily blinding one eye of the dog.
Dr. Joshua Winston faces charges of animal cruelty and theft, according to a prepared statement from Maricopa County Sheriff’s office.
Winston allegedly struck the Chihuahua’s head five times and dislodged the dog’s eye on June 4, according to the statement. The dog needed corrective surgery after the incident, according to the statement.’
‘A Georgia judge ordered the release Monday of a man sentenced to 10 years in prison for consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, a sentence that had been widely criticized as grossly disproportionate to the crime.
Several influential people, including former President Jimmy Carter, publicly supported Genarlow Wilson’s appeals, and state lawmakers voted to close the loophole that led to his 10-year term. [..]
Monday’s ruling doesn’t ensure Wilson’s freedom, though.
Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker said Monday afternoon that he had filed notice of appeal, arguing that Georgia law does not give a judge authority to reduce or modify the sentence imposed by the trial court. He said he would seek an expedited ruling from the Georgia Supreme Court.’

Martin Bryant, Australia’s worst mass murderer, is serving 35 life sentences for the 1996 killings of 35 people at Tasmania’s historic Port Arthur penal settlement, in the world’s worst mass murder by a lone gunman.
Bryant has made at least five suicide attempts in Tasmania’s Risdon Prison and has been treated at hospital twice this year after slashing himself with disposable razor blades. [..]
“The sole goal of his (Bryant’s) imprisonment is punishment and punishment without hope of release is tantamount to torture,” Dr Nitschke said.
“As a society we should admit we are sanctioning torture here and in those circumstances we should allow him to die or provide him with the means to obtain a peaceful death.”
He said that giving Bryant an opportunity to end his life would quickly determine if he wants to kill himself.’
‘The CIA has dismissed a Council of Europe report alleging that it ran secret jails for terror suspects in Europe after the 11 September attacks.
A CIA spokesman said the report was biased and distorted, and that the agency had operated lawfully.
Swiss Senator Dick Marty, who wrote the report, said secret CIA prisons “did exist in Europe from 2003 to 2005, in particular in Poland and Romania”.
The charge was denied by both Polish and Romanian officials.’

‘Thirty-one dirty and disorientated workers have been rescued from a brickwork factory in China, where they were being held as virtual slaves.
Eight workers were so traumatised by their experiences that they were only able to remember their names.
The labourers had to work unpaid for 20 hours at a time, and were only given bread and water in return.
The brickworks, in the poor inland province of Shanxi, is owned by the son of the local Communist Party secretary.’

‘A mother is upset after a 14-year-old babysitter engaged in sexual conduct with her eight-year-old boy, and the eight-year-old was charged with lewd conduct.
Prosecutors have since dropped the charges against the boy, but his mother is still concerned.
The sexual conduct occurred during a game of “truth or dare” while the boy was being watched by the babysitter.
Prosecutors say that, while the babysitter initiated the contact, the young boy was a willing participant.
“She dared my son to touch her breasts,” says Michelle Grosbeck, the boy’s mother.’
‘One robber’s list of things to steal included whiskey, a thermometer and lettuce.
Police were called to a grocery store late Thursday after witnesses said a 46-year-old man from Brown Deer threatened employees. The workers said the man gestured as though he had a concealed gun and told them he would shoot.
The man left with 12 bottles of whiskey, two heads of lettuce and a digital thermometer, police said.
Officers found a vehicle in a nearby neighborhood that matched a description given by store employees. The man was taken into custody and identified from store surveillance video.’

Lionel Dube Jr., 47, of Argyle, was charged with disorderly conduct, criminal threatening and violation of bail conditions after police responded to reports that he was waving the chain saw at passing motorists late Tuesday.
“You know how in the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ the guy raised his chain saw up and revved it? That’s what he was doing,” Deputy Sheriff Michael Knights said. “Alcohol was involved.”‘

‘A European investigator said on Friday he had proof Poland and Romania hosted secret prisons for the Central Intelligence Agency in which it interrogated top al Qaeda suspects using methods akin to torture.
Swiss senator Dick Marty said Poland housed some of the CIA’s most sensitive prisoners, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who says he masterminded the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States that killed almost 3,000 people.
“There is now enough evidence to state that secret detention facilities run by the CIA did exist in Europe from 2003-2005, in particular in Poland and Romania,” Marty said in a report for the Council of Europe human rights watchdog.’

Lyle George Morgan, a builder from the southern city of Invercargill, appeared to fall asleep in the city’s district court on Wednesday while his lawyer was questioning a prosecution witness, The Southland Times newspaper reported. [..]
When Judge Kevin Phillips noticed the defendant dozing he halted proceedings and asked defense counsel David Slater if Morgan was drunk.
“A distinct possibility,” Slater replied.

Frank Ranieri, 25, of Staten Island, paid at least five girls — all between the ages of 15 and 17 — thousands of dollars since 2003 to engage in “piquerism,” a sexual fixation on penetrating the body with sharp objects, such as pins, nails and stilettos, the Staten Island district attorney’s office said.
The Daily News, citing unidentified sources, reported that Ranieri was a member of the Police Academy’s July 2004 class, but that he left after two months. It was not clear why.’

Silvia Bernal, 30, told The (Annapolis) Capital that about 15 officers burst through the front door of her apartment while she was cooking dinner about 8:20 p.m. She said the officers kicked her husband in the groin while she fled into a bedroom and barred the door with her body.
Then she said both of them were taken to the ground and handcuffed. The Capital said a police officer went outside and realized they had raided the wrong residence.’
‘An 81-year-old retiree was back in court on Tuesday facing a felony charge of allegedly assaulting a Kern County deputy. [..]
Last March, Montgomery was in the middle of a dispute with his neighbor over his pig farm. The feud boiled over when he decided to paint a wall facing his neighbor’s property using an assortment of old paint, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. The neighbor then called the authorities to stop Montgomery.
A Kern County sheriff’s deputy who arrived at his home in Northwest Bakersfield told him to stop painting the wall. Montgomery said he explained to the deputy the fence was his to paint.
“He accused me of graffiti on my own fence,” said Montgomery.
The deputy said Montgomery ignored the deputy and continued to paint the wall with a long-handled paint roller.
According to Deputy District Attorney Alex Harper, Montgomery hit the deputy over the head with the roller when the deputy tried to wrestle it away. The deputy was covered in paint and required medical attention for the gash in his head. Harper said the deputy received several stitches.’

Habeas corpus was revoked by last year’s Military Commissions Act, which has been assailed as unconstitutional and un-American by leaders across the political spectrum. Today’s habeas bill was backed by the Judiciary Committee’s Democratic Chairman, Patrick Leahy, and its Republican Ranking Member, Arlen Specter. “The drive to restore this fundamental right has come from both sides of the aisle,” said Sharon Bradford, an attorney at the bipartisan Constitution Project, in response to today’s vote. “Restoring America’s commitment to the rule of law is not a partisan cause; it is a patriotic one,” she added.’
‘According to an Osceola County Sheriff’s Office report, the incident took place early Saturday morning after the victim said he met Lundquist at Linkester’s Tap Room in Polk County and had some drinks. The duo left the bar together at about 2 a.m. with the intent to go to the victim’s house, the report stated.
The men instead drove to Tri-County Road, located off Highway 27, where the men engaged in sexual activities, sheriff’s deputies said. Lundquist then said he had to retrieve something, so he got into his car and drove down the road, the report stated.
According to sheriff’s deputies, the victim said that is when a large piece of construction machinery driven by Lundquist came down the road. The victim said he got off the road to avoid it but was struck in the leg and knocked into a ditch, the report showed. The victim told sheriff’s deputies that he began screaming for Lundquist to stop and help him, but Lundquist turned the machine around, strking him a second time.’

Hours after she was sent home under house arrest Thursday for an undisclosed medical condition, the judge who put her in jail for violating her reckless-driving probation ordered her into court to decide if she should go back behind bars.
Hilton must report to court at 9 a.m. Friday, Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told The Associated Press.
“My understanding is she will be brought in in a sheriff’s vehicle from her home,” Parachini said.
The celebrity inmate was sent home from the Los Angeles County jail’s Lynwood lockup shortly after 2 a.m. in a stunning reduction to her original 45-day sentence. She had reported to jail Sunday night after attending the MTV Movie Awards in a strapless designer dress.

According to prosecutors Vang Pao and his co-conspirators planned to spend almost USD 10 million (pounds 5 million) on weaponry including assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, Stinger surface-to-air missiles, mines and C-4 explosives.
They were recruiting a mercenary force to attack government buildings in the Lao capital Vientiane and “reduce them to rubble,” they said.’
‘A judge has granted a new trial to Julie Amero, a former substitute teacher in Norwich, Connecticut who was convicted in January on four felony counts of risking injury to minors after she was unable to prevent pornographic pop-ups from showing up on a computer in a classroom in 2004. [..]
Despite testimony that the monitor did not face the children, that Amero asked for help from other teachers and a vice principal, and that the schools IT administrator allowed the school’s filtering software to expire, Amero was found guilty.
Security experts around the internet have rallied to Amero’s defense, arguing that it is clear that the computer Amero was using was infested with pop-up software, but the school’s IT administrator told the jury he’d never heard of such software.’

‘A German thief got nabbed after he tore off his finger during a bungled break-in – then went back to retrieve it.
After setting off the alarm at Berlin’s Technical Museum late on Tuesday, the 35-year-old man escaped from two security guards, clambered up a three-metre fence, but got snagged by a ring on the middle finger of his right hand.
The man managed to free himself, but only after tearing off the finger.
The security guards arrested him when he went back to recover the severed digit and ask for medical aid.
“His comment afterwards was ‘Breaking and entering doesn’t pay,'” said a spokeswoman for local police.
Doctors were unable to reattach the man’s finger.’
‘Authorities are on the lookout for a man who showed up at a San Jose pizza parlor wielding a 2-foot machete because his delivery pizza didn’t show up soon enough, police said today.
The manager of Pizza My Dear on South Bascom Avenue suffered cuts during the attack Friday and had to get several stitches, police Sgt. Nick Muyo said today. [..]
“The suspect meets him and is cussing a blue streak, yelling at the guy, saying he doesn’t want the pizza because he was late,” Muyo said.
The deliveryman called his manager, who instructed him to return to the parlor with the pizza.
