Man gives finger to sheriff, crashes car

‘Police said they arrested a South Charleston man for driving under the influence after he flipped his middle finger at Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford and then crashed his car. [..]

Rutherford said Vickers took the exit and as he did, he extended his middle finger toward the sheriff.

Vickers then crashed the right side of his station wagon along the exit’s guardrail, Rutherford said.

“He was looking directly at me, giving me the finger and just ran into the guardrail,” Rutherford said. “There’s no question in my mind he was not paying attention.”‘

“Pocket Man” is dangerous

`Police have finally confirmed that the sex offender dubbed the “Pocket Man” is a serious serial sex criminal that has assaulted at least 120 young boys across the country. [..]

Internally, police consider the investigation a scandal, with only those directly involved knowing how serious the assaults have been. Olafsen said many have envisaged the Pocket Man as a pathetic flasher.

“Unfortunately many police and others have not understood how serious this case is. The attacks have been monstrous sexual assaults,” Olafsen said.

Now police say they will mobilize all necessary resources to arrest the man whose nickname comes from his ploy of charming young boys and then asking them to help him find something in his pocket. [..]’

Teenager Had Brick Smashed Into Mouth

`A teenager had a brick smashed into his mouth when he was attacked in the centre of Caerleon, a court heard.

Moments later his attacker, 25-year-old Kevin Morgan, left the scene saying: “Hell, why did I do that? I’m going back to prison, man.”

His victim suffered broken teeth and damaged lips and was unable to speak properly for three weeks and was off school a month, Cardiff crown court heard.’

3 reportedly held in ‘ghost bride’ sale

`Police in northern China have detained three men for the deaths of two women whose corpses were to be sold as “ghost brides” to accompany dead men in the afterlife, state media said.

Authorities indicated that the killings last year were not isolated cases, the Legal Daily newspaper said on its Web site, but it did not give any details.

Yang Dongyan, 35, a farmer from Shaanxi province, said he had bought a young woman for $1,600 and planned to sell her as a bride, according to the paper.

But then he met Liu Shenghai, who told him that the woman could command a higher price as a “ghost bride,” it said. The tradition, called “minghun” or afterlife marriage, is common in the Loess Plateau region of northern China, where a recently deceased woman is buried with a bachelor to keep him company after his death.’

Apple DRM illegal in Norway

`Apple’s digital rights management lock on its iPod device and iTunes software is illegal, the Consumer Ombudsman in Norway has ruled. The blow follows the news that Germany and France are joining Norway’s action against Apple.

The Norwegian Consumer Council, Forbrukerradet, lodged a complaint with the Ombudsman on behalf of Norwegian consumers claiming that the Fairplay DRM system acted against the interests of consumers. It said the fact the technology stopped songs bought from iTunes being played on any player other than an iPod broke the law in Norway.

The Ombudsman has now agreed, according to Torgeir Waterhouse, senior advisor at the Consumer Council.’

Russian jailed for trying to sell weapons-grade uranium for $1m

`The safety of Russia’s vast nuclear arsenal was called into question yesterday after Georgia said it had arrested a man trying to sell weapons-grade uranium hidden under his jacket. Officials in Tiblisi said Oleg Khintsagov had been captured after smuggling the uranium into the country. Agents posing as members of a radical Islamist group arrested the Russian businessman in a sting operation.

Mr Khintsagov, 50, had offered to sell 100 grams of enriched uranium for $1m, officials said. After producing a sample, he told agents he had a further two or three kilograms of uranium at his home in Vladikavkaz, in neighbouring southern Russia – enough to make a small nuclear bomb.’

David Hicks: the government needs a verdict of Guilty

`Mr Ruddock continues to assert that the Australian Government is doing all it can for David Hicks, and that it is working to ensure safeguards are in place for him to be given a fair trial. It is, however, difficult to imagine an outcome that could be more politically embarrassing or damaging for the Government than for David Hicks, after all this time, to be found not guilty of the charges suggested. It is surely of major importance to the Government now that he be tried and convicted of serious offences, and before this year’s election takes place.

All the evidence suggests that far from receiving anything like a fair trial, Mr Hicks will be charged and tried under procedures amounting to a kangaroo court of the most noxious kind. The fact that our Government continues to support this travesty gives the community every justification for reassessing the Government’s publicly stated view. In reality, it wants Mr Hicks convicted, and as soon as possible.’

Gonzales Questions Habeas Corpus

`In one of the most chilling public statements ever made by a U.S. Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales questioned whether the U.S. Constitution grants habeas corpus rights of a fair trial to every American. [..]

“There is no expressed grant of habeas in the Constitution; there’s a prohibition against taking it away,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales’s remark left Specter, the committee’s ranking Republican, stammering. [..]

Gonzales continued, “The Constitution doesn’t say every individual in the United States or citizen is hereby granted or assured the right of habeas corpus. It doesn’t say that. It simply says the right shall not be suspended” except in cases of rebellion or invasion.”’

Skydiver ‘sabotaged’ love rival’s chute

`A skydiver sabotaged a fellow jumper’s parachute after finding out that the woman was having an affair with her boyfriend, police say.

Els Van Doran, 37, fell 4000 feet to her death during a dive over an airfield in Zwarteberg, Belgium, on November 18 last year.

Van Doran, a married mother, had been taking part in a group jump with friend Els Clootemans, Clootemans’s Dutch boyfriend Marcel and a fourth parachutist.

The four linked hands in a star formation, but neither of Van Doran’s parachutes would open.

Her death plunge was captured on a camera fitted to her helmet. She fell into a garden and died instantly.’

City to settle topless jumping jacks case

`The city likely will pay $35,000 to settle the claim of a girl forced to perform jumping jacks topless in front of a police officer to avoid arrest.

The Pensacola City Council’s finance committee on Monday forwarded the proposed settlement to a Thursday vote before the full council.

The victim’s attorney, Robert Bleach, said after the meeting that his client will be “glad to put this ugly incident behind her” and will use the money for her college education.

“She certainly didn’t want to go through a trial and relive the whole thing all over again,” he said.’

God Hates Goths

‘”The greatest threat to today’s society is the rise of the gothic subculture. Goth is a sinister and violent subculture obsessed with Satanism, Wicca, Vampirism, BDSM, rape, child abuse, Hitler, bondage, sick sexual perversions, serial killers, death, drugs, self mutilation and other sick practices to vile to mention. Goth’s are the Devil’s Children. In my opinion, Goths are more dangerous to children than paedophiles” – Rev. R.G. Green’

Boy’s screaming kills chickens, for crying out loud

‘Hundreds of chickens have been found dead in east China — and a court has ruled that the cause of death was the screaming of a four-year-old boy who in turn had been scared by a barking dog, state media reported on Wednesday. [..]

“One neighbour told police that he had heard the boy’s crying that afternoon and another villager confirmed the boy screaming by the henhouse window,” the newspaper said.

A court ruled the boy’s screaming was “the only unexpected abnormal sound” and that 443 chickens trampled each other to death in fear.

The boy’s father was ordered to pay 1,800 yuan ($230) in compensation to the owner of the chickens.’

Man charged over chair leg attack

`A 19-year-old man has been charged over an attack in which another young man had a chair leg embedded in his brain in a fight outside a Melbourne nightclub.

Police said the man turned himself in yesterday.

The victim, also 19, was injured during a gang fight on Sunday morning outside the Metro nightclub on Bourke Street in the CBD.

The 1.9cm-wide metal chair leg pierced his left eye and became embedded in his brain.

Firefighters had to cut away part of the chair before the man, from suburban Northcote, could be treated.’

Woman fined for leaving dog in bag to die

`An elderly Brisbane woman who killed a dog by sealing it in a plastic bag and putting it in a wheelie bin has been fined $2500.

The 71-year-old woman, from Holland Park in Brisbane’s east, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty today in Brisbane Magistrates Court .

She was charged by the RSPCA after she put the dog in a plastic bag which she then dumped in a wheelie bin on October 13 last year.’

Son Gets Six Months, Probation for Dismembering Mother

`A Buffalo teenager who said he killed and slowly dismembered his mother over several days at the urging of the 50-year-old man who was sexually abusing him was sentenced Monday to six months in jail.

Angel Rosa, 16, pleaded guilty in June to a first-degree manslaughter in the death of Madeline Irene, 46, whose head and hands were found encased in cement in a garbage can at the 50-year-old’s home after other body parts were found floating in a nearby river.

Psychiatrists for both the prosecution and the defense determined Rosa was emotionally under the control of Edwin Gimenez, a convicted child molester who was his co-defendant in the homicide.’

Israeli president to be charged with rape

`Prosecutors intend to charge President Moshe Katsav with rape and other crimes against female employees, the Justice Ministry said on Tuesday, in what would be an unprecedented indictment against an Israeli head of state.

Katsav has denied wrongdoing. His post is largely ceremonial and the scandal is unlikely to have a direct impact on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert — who has himself been hurt politically by a string of investigations into suspected corruption, which he has denied.

The case against Katsav, months in the making, appeared certain to strengthen the feeling among many Israelis that misconduct is rampant at the top.’

Police strike pregnant woman eating evidence

`Des Moines police this morning used a striking instrument and pepper spray on a woman they later learned was pregnant in an effort to stop her from eating what they believed was marijuana.

Barbara Brown, 20, of Des Moines, was taken to Broadlawns Medical Center to be treated for what police believed was marijuana consumption.

Police said they were trying to preserve evidence, but Brown managed to chew and swallow all of it.

She was charged with public consumption. The charge refers to the beer she allegedly was drinking, not the marijuana police believe she had eaten.’

Councils funding brothel spies

`Sydney councils are paying private detectives thousands of dollars to have sex with prostitutes so they can gather sufficient proof against illegal brothels.

Nine councils across Sydney have forked out $25,000 in fees to private investigators over the past three years.

The Sunday Telegraph has learned that Ku-ring-gai Council spent $7000 in the past month employing detectives to have sex with prostitutes.

Ku-ring-gai Mayor Nick Ebbeck said the extreme measures were necessary to prove the businesses were illegal.’

Some cops in Tijuana resorting to slingshots

`The drug cartels here are clearly Goliath, heavily armed with automatic weapons.

The municipal police, stripped of their guns this month as part of a corruption probe, are now playing the role of David.

About 60 officers were issued slingshots yesterday for use on patrols in the tourist section of Avenida Revolucion and the business district of Zona Rio, according to a police department spokesman. Some of the officers bought bags of marbles for ammo.

“It’s obviously very denigrating to them to be carrying these kinds of instruments, but they have to look for ways to provide security for the public,” spokesman Fernando Bojórquez said. ‘

Phone thief repents after 21 text messages

`A Chinese thief has returned a mobile phone and thousands of yuan he stole from a woman after she sent him 21 touching text messages, Xinhua news agency said on Monday. [..]

She gave up hope of seeing her possessions again after sending 21 text messages without a reply.

But on her way out on Sunday morning, she stumbled over a package that had been left in her courtyard only to discover it was her stolen bag. Nothing had been taken.

“Dear Pan: I’m sorry. I made a mistake. Please forgive me,” a letter inside said.

“You are so tolerant even though I stole from you. I’ll correct my ways and be an upright person.”‘

US forces have ‘abnormal sexual’ drive

`North Korea today described US soldiers serving in South Korea as “infected with an abnormal sexual desire” and said sexual abuse was part of their daily routine.

The ruling party’s newspaper Rodong Sinmun was commenting on the alleged rape by a US soldier of a 67-year-old woman. The 23-year-old private soldier is in a South Korean prison awaiting trial.

The 29,500-strong US military in South Korea has issued an apology for the incident this month.’

Woman, 75, dies after prolong sex with man, 30

`Madam Suametor Denou, 75, died after one Robert Ashitey, 30, had allegedly subjected her to a gruelling bout of sexual intercourse last Monday at Batorme, a suburb of Aflao. Ashitey, fisherman, whose plea was not taken when he appeared before the circuit court at Aflao on a provisional charge of murder was remanded until February 15.

[..] about 09:30 hours on January 15, this year, the witness arrived with food for Madam Denou but to her astonishment saw Ashitey in serious copulation with her.

Mrs Assan said not even the witness’s shout could compel Ashitey to stop the act, until the witness hit him on the forehead with a stick forcing him to take to his heels.’

The Purloined Sirloin

`Yet most shoppers who use the five-finger discount in the meat aisle are neither so brazen nor so desperate. Carts brimming with groceries, they’ll stealthily slide a single tenderloin or T-bone into a coat pocket, then hit the checkout line alongside their nonlarcenous peers. In this way, millions of pounds of beef, pork, and veal disappear from supermarket shelves each year. Meatlifting is a grave problem for food retailers: According to the Food Marketing Institute, meat was the most shoplifted item in America’s grocery stores in 2005. (It barely edged out analgesics and was a few percentage points ahead of razor blades and baby formula.)

Meat’s dubious triumph is due in part to a law enforcement crackdown on methamphetamine use. [..]’

Is the Vatican a Rogue State?

`The Vatican’s attorney general Nicola Picardi released the astounding statistic at the start of 2007: The tiny nation’s justice department in 2006 had to contend with 341 civil and 486 criminal cases. In a population of 492, that measures out to 1.5 cases per person — twenty times the corresponding rate in Italy.

[..] About 90 percent of these crimes go unpunished, which is not a measure of Christian mercy but a sign of the perpetrators’ favorite method of escape. They can break for the border — a few meters away — to Italy. [..]

Pope Benedict XVI recommended another strategy in a speech to Vatican security personnel. “Let us pray,” he said, “for the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary.” [..]’

Web of cyber lies leads to murder, police say

`He was an 18-year-old Marine headed to war.

She was an attractive young woman sending him off with pictures and lingerie.

Or so each one thought. [..]

“When you’re on the Internet talking, you haven’t got a clue who that is on the other end,” Erie County Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Kenyon said. “You don’t have a clue.”‘
