`A drunk driver is facing criminal charges after taking a fire engine for a joyride, with the lights and sirens blaring.
Canyon County sheriff’s deputies first spotted the fire truck driving north on highway 45 just after midnight.
They didn’t know of any fires in the area and called area dispatch centers to investigate.’
`A World War II veteran has been found decapitated in the backyard of the northern NSW home where he lived alone for two decades, in a sickening and seemingly motiveless murder.
The severed head of 82-year-old Mark Hutchinson was found lying next to his body, said an ambulance spokesman in Armidale.
Relatives made the grisly find in the yard that backs onto a bike path and parkland when they called to see Mr Hutchinson yesterday, police said.’

`An afternoon picnic on a southern Sydney beach turned violent yesterday when a dispute between two families resulted in a saucepan versus knife duel in the fading light.
The two extended families – more than 180 people – had been picnicking separately at Dolls Point when a child from one of the families was struck by a soccer ball being used in a match by the other family, police say.
The incident caused an argument between the two families and two men allegedly attacked each other, one with a saucepan, the other with a knife, police said.’

The Missoula County coroner’s office identified the man as Kenneth Ellingson, 37, of Missoula, and said the cause of death was positional asphyxiation. [..]

`Dentists, doctors, lawyers and other professionals in the Pittsburgh area have been targeted by a “hit man” e-mail scheme, receiving messages that tell them to pay up to spare their lives, the FBI said.
The e-mail, which was sent to most recipients around Christmas, tells the reader that there is a contract out on his life, generally for $50,000.
It says that if the recipient sends the “hit man” more money than that — generally ranging from $80,000 to $150,000 — the hit man will leave him alone.’

`Rotorua police were “amazed and horrified” when they stopped a car driving erratically and found a 14-year-old girl at the wheel with her mother drunk in the passenger seat.
The car had been spotted twice narrowly missing collision with oncoming trucks on State Highway 2 before it was stopped at 8am yesterday on White Pine Bush Rd near Whakatane, the Rotorua Daily Post reported today.
The mother, 35, who was allegedly drunk, had been driving from Auckland with the teenager and three other children aged between five and 10 in the car.
Her daughter took over when she had started falling asleep at the wheel, police said.’

`The U.S. Embassy in Athens was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade Friday morning, said top metropolitan police officer Asimakis Golfis.

Their daughters and two other 13-year-old girls were charged with disorderly conduct and their cases were turned over to the Juvenile Detective Division. [..]

`Danny Robert Villegas liked prison so much he staged a robbery just to get back in, police say. Officers were called to the Kennedy Space Center Federal Credit Union on Monday after Villegas allegedly walked inside, told the teller he was robbing her and said, “You might as well call the police now,” according to a police report.
Police Lt. Ron Wright said Villegas then sat on a couch in the bank lobby to wait for police.
“He said he wanted to rob a federal bank because he wanted to go back to a federal penitentiary,” Wright said. “Apparently he robbed a bank in Fresno, California, 10 years ago, was sentenced to 70 months in a federal penitentiary in Phoenix and he enjoyed his time there.”‘

‘A man under arrest for dismembering the body of his sister sliced off her hair and breasts in an apparent attempt to hide his victim’s gender, said police.
Yuki Muto, 21, from Tokyo’s Shibuya-ku, told officers that he disposed of the breasts by putting them in the garbage disposal in his kitchen sink.
Muto is under arrest for slicing the body of his 20-year-old sister Azumi into more than 10 separate parts, mostly at the joints. He put the other body parts into four plastic bags and hid them in his room.’
`Most people who know about the Hurricane Carter case only know the Hollywood version presented in the movie starring Denzel Washington.
