Which MPs would pass the dope test?

‘The Christian Democrat leader, Fred Nile, wants random drug testing for all NSW MPs.

He will be first to volunteer, and wants the Greens MP Lee Rhiannon to be second.

Unaccountably, in 2004 Mr Nile voted for an amendment watering down Rhiannon’s motion to breath-test MPs for alcohol while in Parliament.

Yesterday Mr Nile was tough on drugs in Macquarie Street: “The voting public deserve to know whether the people they elect are capable of making rational decisions and are prepared to devote themselves to the job. There is no room for illegal drug taking in a House of Parliament.”‘

Man took call during rape, police say

‘ Timothy Michael Seibert was in the midst of raping a 49-year-old woman, according to police, when he answered a cell phone call from his wife.

The woman was so close to the phone she could hear Seibert’s wife yelling at him, asking him where he was and what he was doing, according to arrest documents filed by Silver Spring Twp. police. [..]

The woman, who knew Seibert, also told police that Seibert had raped her once before on May 5, according to arrest documents. That incident was not reported until Sept. 3.’

Report: Jail-cell sex show coerced

‘A Philadelphia police officer forced two women to put on a sex show in a jail cell, ordering them to expose their breasts, kiss and touch each other until they broke down in tears, an internal investigation has found.

Internal Affairs also found that police engaged in a coverup and says the women – who were not charged with any crime – should never have been locked up at all.

The report identifies Police Officer Norberto Cappas as the officer who told the women to perform “indecent sexual acts” as a price of release.

It also faults four other officers involved in the detention and jailing of the women, singling out one for being “evasive” and suffering from a suspicious “memory loss.”‘

Woman walks away from baby after giving birth on Oakland street

‘After giving birth to a premature baby on an East Oakland street, police say the mother ripped the umbilical cord and walked away Friday afternoon, leaving the newborn boy dead or dying in a puddle of blood.

The 4:39 p.m. incident in the 1400 block of 65th Avenue left witnesses and veteran investigators stunned.

“It’s just crazy,” said Oakland police Sgt. Tony Jones of the homicide detail. “Once she started spitting out the baby, you have some obligation to get it some type of medical attention. She didn’t do that.”’

Palestinian, 11, says army used her as shield

‘The Israeli army is investigating whether its troops used two Palestinian children as human shields during a house search operation in the West Bank, after claims by the Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem.

The use of human shields to deter gunmen from opening fire on soldiers has been banned by the Israeli supreme court and forbidden by the army. However, the practice, in which soldiers force Palestinians to approach, enter and search buildings where they believe a gunman may be hiding, remains common. [..]

Mr Amira’s cousin, 15-year-old Amid Amira, told B’Tselem that soldiers also forced him to search three houses, making him enter rooms, empty cupboards and open windows. And an 11-year-old girl, Jihan Dadush, told B’Tselem that soldiers took her from her home three days later, on February 28, forcing her to go into a neighbouring apartment ahead of them. [..]’

Man scalped girlfriend, police say

‘A man remained in jail Monday after Tampa police say he ripped off a large portion of his girlfriend’s scalp with a 6-inch kitchen knife.

After the Friday attack, 40-year-old Tina D. Robinson was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where surgeons attempted to reattach her scalp. Hospital officials would not comment on her condition Monday.

Police say Robinson and her 30-year-old boyfriend Jason Eric Tarvin had been drinking Thursday night and were intoxicated when an argument got violent.’

‘Perv’ Set Up Ex To Be Raped

‘A renowned hedge-fund honcho hatched a heinous revenge plot against his former mistress by posing as her on the Internet – saying she wanted to be kidnapped and raped as part of a sicko sex fantasy, officials said yesterday.

Albert Hsu, 43, a wealthy, married dad of two and former Cub Scout leader, posted his fiendish ad on a hardcore, S&M Web site, Connecticut authorities said.

He allegedly included the woman’s name, photo, address, license-plate number, train schedule to and from work and even the rail car she usually sits in.

“The defendant set the victim up to be abducted and raped by a complete stranger,” prosecutor Ricki Goldstein said in Norwalk, Conn., Superior Court.’

Child on plane screamed ‘Mommy come get me!’

‘”I’ve got her, and you’re not going to get her.”

Beth Johnson heard those words from her ex-husband Monday, shortly before he crashed his rented single-engine plane into his former mother-in-law’s southern Indiana home, killing himself and the couple’s 8-year-old daughter.

The mother-in-law, Vivian Pace, described the cell phone call Tuesday as investigators tried to determine why student pilot Eric Johnson strapped his daughter into the plane’s passenger seat and apparently crashed the plane deliberately into the one-story house. [..]

“That was the only way he could hurt Beth,” she said. “That was the only way he could get to her.”

In the cell phone call, Pace said, her daughter could hear the child in the background saying, ‘Mommy, come get me, come get me.””

Mom pleads guilty to using baby as a weapon

‘A woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to swinging her 4-week-old son like a bat to hit her boyfriend during a fight, fracturing the infant’s skull in the process.

Chytoria Graham, 27, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child under a plea agreement with prosecutors.

By pleading guilty, Graham acknowledged that on October 8 she grabbed her son Jarron by his feet and swung him, hitting her boyfriend and seriously injuring the child.

At Graham’s preliminary hearing in December, paramedic Betty Schau, who treated the baby, recalled that Graham was crying and disheveled when medical crews arrived. She testified that Graham told her, “I swung him. I swung him like a bat.”‘

No call for help as runaway, 13, drank self to death

‘After 13-year-old runaway Brenda Nguyen drank a fifth of vodka in less than half an hour, she spent four hours throwing up and slipping in and out of consciousness, authorities said.

Four adults and her best friend were in a Phoenix apartment with her. She drank that much at the urging of one of the adults so he could have sex with her, Phoenix Police Department detectives said. Another prayed over Brenda as her life slipped away. Someone even revived her with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

But nobody called for help, police said. Instead, thinking she would be OK, they took a nap.

When they awoke and found the eighth-grader dead, they loaded her 97-pound body into a car and dumped it in a Phoenix alley, authorities said.’

Pakistani man sells wife’s kidney to buy tractor

‘Pakistani police have arrested two men after a village woman complained that her husband and relatives had sold one of her kidneys in order to buy a tractor, police said on Tuesday.

Although her kidney had been removed 18 months earlier, the woman, named Safia, only learnt it was missing after seeking treatment for a urinary tract problem in January.

“She has said that she was three months pregnant when her husband, Shakeel Ahmed beat her and then took her to the hospital for treatment,” said Mohammad Akram, duty officer at Noushera Jadeed police station in Punjab province.

“But at the hospital her husband, in connivance with three other people, sold her kidney to buy the tractor,” he said.’

Baby’s accused killer faces new charge

‘At a preliminary hearing yesterday, Allegheny County homicide Detective Robert Opferman testified that Mr. Page confessed that he became angry with Nyia because she kept taking off her diaper. Although Mr. Page initially said he backhanded her, Detective Opferman said Mr. Page later said in a tape-recorded statement that he kicked her between the legs, while wearing Timberland boots, and then put his hand “in there” to stop the bleeding.

He then took her outside, still crying, intending to put her in a sewer, the detective said. Instead, Mr. Page left her on the ground in an old playground less than a mile from the house.’

South-east Asia awash with fake drugs

‘An “epidemic” of counterfeit therapeutic drugs is sweeping south-east Asia, costing hundreds of thousands of lives as victims take them under the mistaken belief that they are receiving vital treatment for their illnesses. A British doctor working in the Laotian capital, Vientiane, found that most of the anti-malarial medicines tested in a sample were sophisticated fakes, often displaying holograms on the packaging, originally aimed at making counterfeiting difficult.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 200,000 of the 1m malaria deaths each year would be prevented if all the drugs taken were genuine.

But the epidemic goes far beyond anti-malarials. [..]

Up to 50% of the drugs sold in Asia and Africa are fakes, in a trade estimated by the US Food and Drug Administration to be worth between $35bn and $44bn (£18.5bn-£23.1bn) annually. [..]’

Splash and Grab

‘The crimes are being called “splash and grab.” Take a look at how the crime plays out at a Wawa’s in south Philadelphia. The crooks take hot coffee or hot chocolate to the counter. They have no intention of paying for it. Instead, its tossed in the face of an un expecting cashier and in some cases police say the victims have been permanently disfigured.

“We can’t tell if it’s the same crew or a copy cat so until we review the surveillance tapes.”‘

Sex abuse reported at youth jail

‘In cold bureaucratic language, the official reports describe lurid acts: High-ranking officials at an isolated state juvenile prison were molesting young male inmates.

Many prison staffers at the West Texas State School complained about the abuse to their immediate bosses and to officials in Austin, the reports say. But, for more than a year, no one in charge did anything to stop it. Evidence was ignored or covered up. Two years after a Texas Rangers investigation concluded, no one has been prosecuted.

Some former employees say similar problems afflict many prisons run by the Texas Youth Commission, whose official mission is to “fix broken children.”‘

11 auto dealership employees accused of bilking mentally ill man out of $100,000

`Eleven employees of a West Seattle automobile dealership allegedly were involved in a plot that resulted in the theft of more than $100,000 from a mentally ill man, King County Prosecutors say.

First, salesmen sold the man a high-priced truck, then they broke into his home to steal more cash, say prosecutors and Seattle Police. They also allege that one salesman then talked the man — by then committed to a mental health unit at Harborview Medical Center — into selling the truck to him at a fraction of its value.’

Hilaly’s verbal spray on convicts, English

`The controversial Muslim leader Sheik Taj el-din al Hilaly has savaged Australia in an interview on Egyptian television, claiming there is no freedom or democracy for Muslims here and that English people are the most unjust and dishonest.

The senior cleric said Muslims were more Australian than Anglo-Saxons because they came here voluntarily, that Australians played the “fear card” to keep Muslims down, and that racial prejudice was the reason for the 55-year sentence given to the gang rapist Bilal Skaf.

“Anglo-Saxons came to Australia in chains, while we paid our way and came in freedom. We are more Australian than them. Australia is not an Anglo-Saxon country – Islam has deep roots in Australian soil that were there before the English arrived,” Sheik Hilaly said.’
